Study for Obedience

Author: Sarah Bernstein

Mood: Dark, challenging

Quote: “No matter how stilled my lips, how low my head, no matter how I allowed myself to be used for the benefit of others, still goodness alluded me.”

Summary: After moving in with her brother, a young woman quickly becomes associated wtih a mysterious and omenous series of events: the death of a herd of cows, a phantom pregnancy, etc. For all her acts of obedience, she cannot seem to earn her place in the community.

Review: For such a slim book, the content is dense. The themes are interesting and the prose lovely, but ultimately I found the premise unrelatable, which I was not expecting.

My Rating:

4 stars
