FlameThrowers

Author:

Rachel Kushner

Overview:

Young artist Reno finds her place in the 1960s New York art scene.

Review:

This is a tale of a self-destructive chameleon absorbing all the worst personality traits of the narcissists around her. I work really hard to avoid toxic people in real life, I’m not sure why I spent 20+ hours with them in this book, just to be gaslit by proxy.

That’s my question to the author: why? I didn’t understand something new about heteronormativity or chauvinism. I didn’t see the affects on Reno or her environment. I didn’t even get a Dickens-esque moral at the end of the story to learn a lesson. So why is this story important to tell now?
